what’s in a name?

January 28th, 2007 · 7 Comments

So KDevelop 3.4 is finally released. yay! Sadly, the real start of KDevelop 4 development (where we actually have the majority of the team working on it) is overshadowed by the prospect of a fork.

We decided around the beginning of KDevelop 4 development, along with the Quanta guys, that we would export an SDK that could be used by people who were wanting to build on top of what KDevelop was already for plugin management and manipulation along with some other things. Thus, what would be known in the beginning as the KDevelop Platform was born. Somewhere down the line, we decided that in the spirit of providing nice names for KDE 4 technologies, we’d get in on the action too and provide a name for our nifty little SDK. Seeing as how we’re not very creative people (at least when it comes to naming things), we’d come up with only one name: “KDevPlatform”. Of course, that was much too boring. When Alexander Dymo proposed “Koncrete” a week or two ago on the IRC channel, we jumped all over it. Nearly everyone that had been active at some point in time within the last year was on IRC. We all liked it. Nobody disagreed. I made the changes and gave our SDK a nice namespace (seriously, don’t shoot me, I’m just the messenger).

Well, there actually ended up being a couple of people who weren’t too hot on the new name of the KDevelop SDK that we’re going to provide. One of those people couldn’t get over the fact that we had renamed a part of KDevelop and will most likely end up forking. We didn’t even rename the application or the name of the project. We only changed the set of libraries that will make up the SDK.

We haven’t decided what we’re going to do about the name. Right now, we’re more interested in fixing up the current code that we have in KDevelop 4 so we can get on to more useful things, like actually being able to use the IDE. I imagine once we get closer to that point, we’ll revisit the name issue.

    Damn, and I thought with KDE 4 people had finally got over the ‘kool’ naming system. May as well call it K0ncr3t3! Still, I wouldn’t fork the project over it.

    I’ve always disliked those K names, so I am glad someone came up with a nicer name. Then again, it’s just a name, and even if the name KDevelop would dissapear completely, I don’t see any reason at all for a fork. The name doesn’t affect the functionality/ideology/philosopy … of a project, so I think it’s kind of immature to start a fork for something like that.

    If someone gets that troubled over a name, let them fork and rot.

    The problem is that the people who had the IRC discussion never sent an email to the kdevelop-devel list about the koncrete name. You can’t just make major changes to the kdevelop api on IRC without informing the mailing list. In my opinion ‘Koncrete’ is a completely crap name which should have been killed at birth. We are describing a highly flexible plugin architecture and the last thing you want to refer to it is by a name like ‘koncrete’, maybe ‘fluid’ or something, but I really don’t think there was anything much wrong with ‘kdev*’ style names.

    Richard: Perhaps you are unaware of what foundations are generally constructed from.

    @Richard:

    “In my opinion ‘Koncrete’ is a completely crap name which should have been killed at birth”, sure because KDevPlatform is such much better, lol.

    I am sorry for my next rant.
    At you serious? Forking cause of a name? What is next, forking cause of the color (sorry for Ubuntu)? Uff, and KDE devel. have the reputation of the open mind people, and Gnome devel. the reputation of narcissists, sure Linus…
