You should all be jumping up and down screaming “I do! I do!” right now.
Yup, Kopete could use some more developers. I changed my mind and decided that we should release it with KDE 4.0 after all and it could use some help getting in shape. I have all sorts of tasks to do, and i’m sure the other developers do as well, so just send me an email (mattr@kde.org) or email kopete-devel@kde.org if you’re interested and we’ll get you hooked up.
If you’re wondering what sort of skills you need, C++ is the minimum requirement as long as you’re willing to learn the Qt and KDE APIs. If you’ve already started learning or already know the Qt and KDE APIs then you’re a step ahead of the game.
The last time I did this, it was a huge success. Hopefully this time will be too. Thanks for your interest.

Do you know if direct connect support is availible for aim in kopete? I can never figure out how to do it, and its embarrasing. If that feature doesn’t exist and you need to implement it, maybe I can step in.

What sort of work needs to be done? UI stuff? Protocol stuff … ? Are you guys intending to ditch all your protocol stuff and use something like libpurple/ telepathy instead …? Basically, what’s the Plan for Kopete, and what can people do to help?

well I do… but I don’t know where to start. Also I wonder if the TODO List in the svn is up2date. If that’s the case and there isn’t an other easy task left I’d like to try to add support for the MSN Plus Color Nick stuff.
I’ve got some C++ and QT skills and I’m willing to learn the KDE4 API. If you tell me that this task isn’t impossible for a “beginner” and there’s nothing else I should and can do I’ll immediately start working.

level 1: filetransfer stuff is there in kde4, and that involves doing direct connections, so I believe that a lot of the code is already in place - it just needs to be made to work for chat as well as filetransfers. heck, maybe someone already did this - I haven’t looked at kopete in quite a while

I know C++ adn some very very bad QT, but I’m 15 and wouldn’t have the time to help much, adn never done anything bigger than 3 or 4 source files so couldn’t handle a large project.
But I really hope Kopete gets developed actively on, it badly needs NAT traversal because I can’t even connect to MSN with it. thanks to my crappy ISP and their “Upgrade to business conection to get basic features” attitude.
Hopefully someone will read this and realise it must be addressed (MSN in windows works fine so not entirely my ISP’s fault, but NO linux messenger will)
[/rant]
Good luck all anyway

ok, time for the answer session.
Anon: everything needs to be done, mostly bugfixes though so we can be ready for the KDE 4.0 release. A move to telepathy is in the works. libpurple is pretty much out of the question, we already have our own code to do that.
Bernhard: We’re in bugfix mode right now. Not sexy work, but useful nonetheless. Please send me an email. I’ll hook you up with a bug to fix. You can also find one on your own if you want. Fixing bugs is often a good way to get acquianted with new source code as well.

I’ve used Kopete from the day I started using Linux a few years ago and it is my favourite IM client. I’d really like to help to get it working for KDE4 release. I know C++ pretty well and I’ve written a few QT apps so I shouldn’t have too big problems. Actually I’ve wanted to write a few addons for Kopete for some time now but haven’t bothered to really look into it.
Only proble could be that I don’t have too much time. Still, if there area a few simple tasks I could do to get the feel of it I could probably help.
